§ Ideas: How to Write a fugue
- Video
- Start with a melodic line (e.g. E in bass)
- Repeat melodic line (e.g. B in treble)
- Reiterate the subject fifth higher, an answer.
- Then go down a fifth (minor), a counter answer.
- Switch the key.
- Use suspensions to "reposition" voices across chords.
- Invert the subject.
- Change modes! (modal imitation).
- Raise everything by a tone / major 3rd / ...
