§ Ragtime Theory
- John Valerio: Stride and Swing Piano
- Left hand: four beats per measure, alternate bass note and chord.
- right hand: plays melodies at twice the speed of the left.
- Right hand is grouped into additive rhythms :
3+2+3
, or 3+3+3
.
§ Harmonization With Respect to Example
- Mary Had a Little Lamb: Forward Rag Roll
- Learn to Play ragtime
- Good ragtime ornament: To go to
C Eb G
, play the Ddim first, with D Ab
, which resolves to Eb G
. see that D = Ebb
, which is the flat third, and G = Ab
, which is the 6th of the C minor scale. This gives me more reason to like Ddim
! - harmonize with respect to 6ths. (e.g. to play A, play a C below it as well).
- Next, when playing e.g.
F
, play an Eb
(the 7th) below it. - Ragtime ornament: To play
Bb D F
when playing F
, flatten the third, giving Db G
, and then play what we wanted to start with D F
. So we play Db G
followed by D F
. This plays well when we want to play the 6th (i.e. the G
over the Bb
). - Can add a sixth to a major chord, so when playing F major (
F A C
), can add a D
. - Harmonize with the third of the chord.
- To play
G
, walk up chord tones, so can play D G
, Eb G
, E G
to walk up. - March style left hand chords: In 4 quarter beats, play root note (A), play chord above (CEA), play 3rd, but play it below the root note (C), then play chord again (CEA).
§ Harmony
- I, IV, V7
- dim7th, secondary dominant
- Joplin used chromatically altered chords.
- Most commonly, a minor triad on top of a IV
- Also, chords built on flat-VI, either as triads or as augmented 6th chords.
- This can be seen as dominant 7th chords build on the flat-VI note of the major scale degree.
